GENERAL EDUCATION INTERVENTION PROCESS - GEI
At Soderstrom, we are very serious about doing what is best for each student: socially, academically, and emotionally. A counselor is available as well as CHUMs, math tutoring and Reading Enhancement. If a child's needs, either behaviorally or academically, go beyond the support that can be offered by the general education teacher or the above mentioned services, we have another process in place to address these needs. This process is the General Education Intervention team process (GEI).
The GEI brings together a team of adults to look at building support for students. The team also works to support the classroom teacher. It is a team approach: many heads, many experts, many approaches.
The first step of the process is for a staff member, generally the classroom teacher, to submit a Request for Assistance form which outlines the needs of the student. A meeting is then called involving staff and parents. Parents are encouraged but not required to attend. At the meeting we work through a problem solving model to identify needs, strategies for addressing needs, and a way to monitor progress. We will identify a need through looking at quantifiable data to develop a General Education Intervention Plan. Follow up meetings are also likely. If you have any questions about this process, please contact Mr. Sjogren.
